China Watch Blog has learnt that a new British Airways advertisement being broadcast on UK television is telling people to stay in the country during the Olympic period, TTG reports.

The ad features a BA aircraft taxiing by road through London to the sound of “London Calling” by the punk band The Clash. The plane’s final destination is the Olympic Park, and as the ground-level journey comes to a halt the endline appears: “Don’t Fly. Support Team GB and ParalympicsGB.”

The country’s travel trade has reacted angrily to the marketing campaign, which was launched yesterday on Facebook.

A spokesperson for the travel agents association ABTA said: “Our own research show that the public are divided between those who at one extreme have changed their holiday plans to stay in the UK, and at the other those who are leaving the country to actively avoid the games. Whatever consumers choose it will be a summer to remember.”
