China Watch Blog has learnt that fighting dementia and Alzheimer’s disease through stimulating elder people to use their brain power, aside from walking 6 miles a week and giving them heavier doses of Vitamin B, has helped to fight these ailments.
Yours truly has an 81 year old mother, who has phase 2 of Alzheimer’s disease, but is responding quite well to “tender loving care”.
If she could play mahjong, she would have been playing the game. However, she is unable to do so. So, we switch on long hours of TV for her to watch various soap operas and movies.
We also have come up with “counting coins” as a therapy too for people affected by dementia. Change lots of coins, get plastic packets, ask them to count 10 coins per packet and line them up. After they finish counting several hundred coins, daily empty the coins into one bag. Then re-start the counting process the next day.
In addition, she has not been walking much for over a year. But we now encourage her to walk daily and she is starting to enjoy her walks.
We also have to chat with the elder folks, and their brain power will not deteriorate that easily.
Best to try a whole lot of different ways to fight the problem.
