China Watch Blog has learnt that a delegation of 40 Asian Media who were given Olympic Torch and accessories souvenirs following their visit for an an update of the preparation for Guangzhou Asian Games and Asian Paralympics Games between Oct 19 to Oct 24, faced numerous problems getting the souvenirs back home.

Souvenir given to Asian media
As it is quite a bulky box containing the souvenirs, most of the journalists tried to, much to their dismay, bring them on board their respective planes, and were faced with various problems.
One of the reporters from Singapore had a “screw driver-like” part of the souvenir confiscated by the airline he was travelling with.
Another journalist had the main Olympic torch souvenir confiscated on the grounds that it could be lighted, and posed a security threat to the airline.
Have you ever heard of a torch that cannot be lighted up?
Yours truly also wonders how those VIPs who were given similar souvenirs when attending the Olympic Games in Beijing brought their gifts home. Or were all of them confiscated and rotting in some warehouses belonging to the airlines or were they destroyed, one wonders.
Other journalists who were lucky enough to pack these torches and their accessories in their suitcases and stored in the luggage compartment did not have problems.
Travellers, whether journalists or not, should beware that if they are carrying anything that might be considered a threat to the airline’s security should not hand carry them onto the plane. Send them via the baggage compartment and avoid all the hassles.
