SEOUL, July 16 (GCTL) - It is estimated that South Korean ports, including Busan port, handled a total of 1.869 million TEUs of containers in June 2012, according to a report released recently by the country's Ministry of Land, Transportation and Maritime Affairs (MLTM).

Japan International Freight Forwarders Association Inc (JIFFA) quoted the MLTM report as saying that the total increased 4.7% year on year from 1.785 million TEUs, but the growth was smaller than the previous months. In the first six months, an all-time high of 11.186 million TEUs were processed, improving 6.1% from 10.546 million TEUs.

Breaking down June's throughput, the combined volume of exports and imports rose 4.1% from a year earlier to 1.145 million TEUs. Transhipment (T/S) cargoes went up 7.2% to 690,000 TEUs. As those to and from China declined due to the slump in the European economy, they failed to make a double-digit improvement for the first time in 15 months, or since February 2011.
