Union refuses to implement approved maintenance system

SYDNEY, June 15 (GCTL) - Qantas has filed on Thursday an application with Fair Work Australia against the Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA), which has instructed its members to take unprotected industrial action by conducting maintenance tasks that are no longer required on aircraft.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) gave Qantas formal approval for the implementation of a new system of maintenance, known as 'maintenance on demand', for Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A330 aircraft operating on domestic routes. This system commenced on Wednesday.

However, the ALAEA has instructed licenced engineers to ignore the new CASA-approved system and continue conducting pre-flight maintenance checks on every flight – despite such checks no longer being required on these modern aircraft. The unprotected industrial action will have no impact on passengers or flights.
